Anyone looking for an awesome workout with one of Dubai’s top personal trainers and which is free every Friday morning?
Yes….I said FREE! Is there a catch? Nope, there’s no catch but the bootcamp was set up by personal trainers Jonny Young (@jonnydubaipt) and Amira (@thatgirlamira) in alliance with Just Giving – see here – to help raise funds for a very worthy cause – The Dubai Foundation for Women and Children. DFWAC is the first licensed non-profit shelter in the UAE for women and children victims of domestic violence, child abuse and human trafficking. It was established in July 2007 to offer victims immediate protection and support services in accordance with international human rights obligations. Donations are not obligatory, they’re optional but recommended and so far Jonny and his team have raised Dhs1,100.00 from online donations. A definite worthy cause I’m sure you will all agree.
The classes are currently taking place at the Lee Hurford Boxing Academy on Al Mayden Street in Al Quoz, Dubai (see here for directions) every Friday morning from 8:30 am to 9:30 and so far there has been an amazing turnout. The venue changes from time to time depending on availability but if you follow Jonny Young’s Instagram page (here) he updates it every week with details of the proposed venue. This was also my first time at the Lee Hurford Boxing Academy and I was quietly impressed with the venue and facilities there. The view alone of the Burj Khalifa would motivate you to kick-start your weekend with a good workout.
The workout itself was intense. There was no hanging around as both Amira and Jonny motivated and encouraged everyone to push themselves harder – a killer if you had a late night the night before like I did! The routine included lots of fat-burning high-intensity exercises such as – a dreaded tabata session, lots of squats, ski-jumps – (not ideal when you’ve just had a baby!!), planks (hate them!), burpees (detest them) and push-ups – all structured into an AMRAP (as many reps as possible) circuit course and of course not forgetting lots of boxing! Yep I felt the burn!
I do love the fact that the workout is held at a Boxing Academy incorporating my fondness for punching a massive punch bag to let out some stress after a hectic week. Jonny and Amira really took this into consideration and fast and furious blows to the bags were all encouraged and pushed! Now I can’t say that I had the style and elegance with my glamorous boxing gloves on like Muhammed Ali (I reckon my inner Conor McGregor was starting to come out instead!) and I definitely wasn’t ‘floating like a butterfly and stinging like a bee’ but I gave it my best shot (pardon the pun) to really punch that bag and burn those calories!
If you’re looking for a great way to start your weekend – start it on the right foot with a great workout. As mentioned, the session is free but donations to the Just Giving charity are greatly appreciated. As an added bonus and treat after the class, everyone got a healthy, organic, gluten-free brownie to enjoy. What more could you want….a free, awesome bootcamp with a home-baked treat afterwards!? I know what I’ll be doing on Friday mornings from now on……..
On a final note, to say I was in pain a couple of days afterwards is an understatement and a testament to how unfit I actually am! Climbing down the stairs was a complete struggle – even coughing?!?…..but as they say…..’no pain, no gain’ and there’s nothing more rewarding than working out hard as well as feeling the results! Hopefully I’ll see you all there and finally……remember………
