Ok I’m not afraid to admit it…..I’m a big Kardashian/Jenner fan! Always have and probably always will be! #sorrynotsorry. There…..I’ve said it now….so let’s get that out of the way first. So anyone who’s not into the Kardashian/Jenner clan, better look away now as this post is a Kylie Jenner in particular fan-splurge. Maybe this sounds a bit corny (sorry if it does) but I feel like I’ve watched Kendall and Kylie Jenner grow up…..on my tv screen…..every week….on E! So, to see what they are up to now and how well they are doing (yes we all know it has all come too easy to them because of their names etc) is somewhat interesting in a ‘Truman Show’ kinda way?
Kylie in particular (the youngest of the Jenner clan and always it seems – in the shadow of her super-model sister Kendall) has really evolved into this super-savvy beauty entrepreneur (all thanks to the Momager herself – Kris Jenner!) with a makeup empire – Kylie Cosmetics – which has gone through the roof with sales (17 shades of lippies and counting), advertising and revenue. Whether she’s changing her hair colour, posing provocatively not dissimilar to her sister Kim, breaking up or getting back together with her on-off now ex-boyfriend Tyga, acquiring new ink or adding to her impressive and extensive designer shoe collection – she’s BIG news – brands love her and being the most viewed person on Snapchat as well as almost 64 million followers on Instagram – her social media profile and following is now considered ‘cult status’. The minute she endorses a product or literally mentions it on her social media platforms – said product sells out immediately! Whatever about the ‘Kate (Middleton) Effect’…… the ‘Kylie Effect’ is out in full force! I follow her on Snapchat so it’s fascinating to see her beauty empire all played out in terms of showcasing her products (I suppose she’s really the best muse of the brand – with her ever-pouting Snapchat selfies and LIP-syncing to all these random R&B and rap tracks) the new products she’s releasing, her own Kylie Cosmetics HQ which is currently under construction and literally watching the Internet and Google crash almost every time there’s a restock on her site. Of course, let’s not beat around the bush here…….we all know that her profile and celebrity status took on a whole different level after she had those now famous ‘lips’ enhanced as well as ‘other’ cosmetic procedures done and the fact that she completely denied it for so long! Ya right Kylie…..you weren’t fooling us.
When she initially released her Lipkits – it caused such a media frenzy that you were considered incredibly lucky to have bagged one of the most sought after products of 2016. In fact, it has now become kind of an ‘ISSUE’ in regards to acquiring her products as the minute they go on sale on her website they are LITERALLY (see what I done there lol) gone within minutes!
Of course, giving into hype (which I usually do ha, ha) I HAD to get my hands on some of these purely for blog purposes of course ;-). After a few failed and frustrating attempts, I was finally quick enough to secure my Lipkits (I felt like I won some sort of makeup lottery when I got that confirmation email to say ‘Congrats…..they were on the way!’). Sad I know…….but true ha, ha!
So this blog post is my review of the matte Lipkits I got as well as a couple of the glosses, the little tips I have to actually get them online and basically whether or not they are worth the hype!
For comedy purposes…….I may as well put in a disclaimer that – NO – Kylie Jenner did not send me any of her Lipkits or glosses (like….why would she lol). I purely bought them myself and stayed up way past my bedtime to painfully try and get them in my online shopping basket!
How to get the Lipkits?
From a fair bit of trial and error and a few failed attempts, I eventually figured out the best way to get the Kylie Lipkits online. As most people know, the minute Kylie Cosmetics is restocked for online purchasing, it 9 times out of 10 sells out within minutes and you’re left refreshing the screen in hope that your chosen lip product is still in your online basket and the site hasn’t crashed. So what I did was I set up Instagram notification alerts from a couple of different Instagram accounts which purely discuss, inform and alert people of any new products from the Kylie Cosmetics range and more importantly when the next restock is gonna happen including times all around the world. The two main Instagram accounts I follow for these updates are: @kylielipkit_ and @lipsnitches. Once I know the time the restock is happening (usually around 11pm/12am UK/Ireland time) I’m like a demented woman on the laptop refreshing it until the site is live and ready to shop!
Tip: You need to be quick though and KNOW EXACTLY what you want. So do your research beforehand to find out which product you actually want coz you ain’t got time once the whole world starts clicking on!
You also need to have your credit card details at the ready and CHECK OUT as fast as you can…..like your life depended on it….coz the longer your items are left in your online basket……the more likely the site is gonna implode and crash – yes that happened me!!
What did I order?
I actually placed two separate orders and acquired the matte Lipkits first (Mary Jo, Koko and Posie) as it was all fairly new and she hadn’t launched the glosses at that time. Once she released the glosses, I bought two of them: Literally and So Cute. Packaging wise……..I have to hand it to her, it’s on point. All of the products come in a black box which when opened has a large KYLIE in big white font on the inside lid and company branding on both the inside and outside of the box. The product is protected with some foam and in each box theres a cute little postcard with a little message from Kylie in her handwriting thanking you for purchasing her Lipkit and for the glosses and hoping you enjoy it. Nice little touch! In addition to the sleek packaging and products themselves – I love how she has named the matte lipkits after members of her family and in general, all the names are ‘Like Literally So Cute’…….(sorry I couldn’t resist!!!)
Kylie Matte Liquid Lipkits – Mary Jo, Koko and Posie.
I really wanted to try the matte lipkits because of the hype firstly but mainly I wanted my lips to look like Kylie Jenner. Realistic much?? But seen as matte lips are huge at the moment and the fact that her company had come up with the genius idea of pairing a lip pencil with a matte liquid lip colour, that alone was a winner for me. How often to you spend your time looking for a lip pencil to be an exact match and twin to your lipstick? Not any longer, thanks to Kylie’s Lipkits – both the lip pencil and liquid lipstick come together in the same box and compliment each other.
On first impression of the Lipkits, I really like them. The packaging of the product itself is sleek, has the ‘liquid’ logo brand and looks expensive – not cheap and nasty. I have to say, the pencil alone is just fab. It’s so creamy, goes on like butter plus colour pigmentation is really good and can be just as easily used on its own without the actual liquid lip colour. The liquid lip formula also impressed me to say the least. The application wand is easy to use and distributes the colour nice and evenly. The colour almost glides on in like a velvety motion. It dries almost instantly into matte form and in terms of drying out your lips – I haven’t had an issue with that. I always top up my lips when needs be with some vaseline or Paw Paw ointment if I find my lips are really feeling dry due to a matte lipstick but with the lipkits I found that firstly they stayed put for most of the day even after eating, kissing the kids etc and didn’t find my lips dry or flakey. I also had to remove the product with eye makeup and micellar water coz it wasn’t budging during my usual cleansing routine. One thing I will say though is that although I do love this product, the lines on my lips (ok maybe thats an age thing??) are definitely more visible. Unfortunately, that is one of the things which can’t really be prevented whilst wearing matte lipsticks but I am going to try a lip oil to see if it makes any difference.
Named after Khloe, I really like this matte nude colour on me (probably best suited to my pale Irish skin!) – when I say nude…..it has a slight tint of mauve in it which is fine because mauve has a touch of blue and actually suits cool complexions – which is what I have. If you have pale to fair skin, I can definitely recommend Koko.
Tip: To tell whether or not you’re cool or warm toned……..look at the veins of your wrist. If they’re blue (like me!!!) you’re cool-toned and if they’re green, you’re warm-toned.
I think this is now up there as one of my favourite reds! Named after Kylie’s maternal grandmother Mary Jo, this shade is a timeless, matte, blue-based red that flatters all cool skin tones and perfect for those of us who have pale and fair skin. I prefer blue-toned reds as I feel they flatter my complexion more and the shade is so vibrant, I can see myself purchasing this again.
Posie (the name was actually picked by a fan when Kylie ran a competition on her Instagram account) is definitely more of a stronger mauve shade. Because I’m so pale, it’s more of a bolder colour on me. Anyone with a warmer complexion, this will lend itself to more of a neutral nude shade. For me, I think I will probably wear this more at night for going out – I think its a bit too bold as a daytime nude on me but I do love that it leans itself to more of a purple tone which adds that pop of strong colour.
Super creamy formula with an almost moisturising feel to them, not sticky, (failed the ‘hair-doesn’t-stick-to-the-lips’ test but then again every lip gloss does!!) great shine and quite pigmented depending on whether you go for So Cute (light shade) Literally (medium shade) or Like (dark shade).
Although this is the lightest shade of the glosses and particularly supposed to suit fair and pale skins…..I find this almost too pale for me…….and I’m PALE! It has a grey base which doesn’t suit my own lip colour and it goes on as almost a nude white colour so I will probably only wear this over a lipstick to add shine to the actual lip colour. This is the one which I was most disappointed with and definitely wouldn’t purchase it again. It’s just the wrong colour for me!
Now this shade is more ‘up-my-street’. Really pigmented with a gorgeous glossy shine. Definitely up there as one of my favourite glosses as its neutral enough to still give colour to my lips with a slight subtle touch of brown. Love this one!
Where can I get them and how much?
All of the Kylie Cosmetics products are only available on her website – here (she doesn’t really need to sell them anywhere else in fairness). Price point……they’re not super cheap but they’re not overly expensive either. The Matte Lipkits are $29 each (approx €25) plus shipping to Ireland is $14.95 (approx €13). Interestingly the glosses are $15 each (approx €13) so in fact the shipping costs ($14.95/€13) are almost the same price as the gloss itself!
I haven’t tried nor am I looking to purchase any of the Metallic lipkits or other Matte colours because I just wouldn’t use the shades. I have been tempted to try Candy (apparently Kylie’s fav) but feel it may be too dark as a nude on my pale skin. So I think for now, I’m happy with my Kylie stash.
So that rounds up my picks and review of the Kylie Matte Lipkits and glosses. I think if you are also a fan of the Kardashian/Jenner clan, you will like this product because remember after all, you are buying into the name and brand. I suppose like all of them, they get a lot of stick over who they are and what they stand for but if you have a good head for business (hello Momager Kris Jenner), have the connections and opportunity (hello loads of money) – why wouldn’t she (Kylie) create a massive beauty empire and probably make more money than Kim and the rest of them put together? Anyway, that’s my two pennies worth…..hope you enjoyed the post and let me know if any of you have tried the Lipkits and what do you think? For now…..see you again next time here……..
