Pleated Midi-skirt: √

Pompom Statement Necklace: √
Yep……it’s safe to say I’m ‘Summer 2016’ ready……now if we could just sort the weather out!
This summer has seen a lot of trends (mainly thanks to the 90’s) dictating our summer wardrobes, high street stores, holidays and bank balances ha, ha! Along with the ‘off-the-shoulder’ look that is EVERYWHERE at the mo, bomber jackets and pleated skirts are MASSIVE. In fact, bomber jackets warrant a blog post all on their own – but thats another day’s work! So this post is dedicated to the ‘love it or hate it’ pleated skirt – namely ‘micro-pleats’ which Stella McCartney, Giles Deacon and Carolina Herrera amongst others showcased during their SS16 shows.
Now it is safe to say, I’m a big fan of midi-skirts. I’m not that tall (5ft 5in) so it’s the perfect length for me. I don’t particularly love my legs (quite normal and socially acceptable to have body hang-ups….right?!?) so again – perfect length – and I think I’ve gone past the age of little mini-skirts without telling you how old I actually am! So yes, midi-skirts are my skirt-length of choice per se. So when the ‘trend-alert’ signals start flashing ‘micro-pleats’ for SS16 – I’m ALL OVER THAT as fast as those high street stores start churning them out! This fab forest green pleated midi-skirt is from Topshop which I actually first spotted on an episode of Irish magazine TV show – Xpóse – a show I always watch and always get great ideas from (hence the purchase of said skirt!!). After watching the show, I went online and bought the skirt immediately – but I bought the ‘Tall’ size (I’m not tall though) as I wanted the length to be more midi than knee-length.
Tip – if you do want to have more of a midi-length – buy the taller version or a size bigger than what you normally would wear as a the bigger size allows for the skirt to sit more on the hips giving a longer length.
This skirt is definitely up there as one of my fav’s! It’s so easy to wear, very comfortable, I’ve had some nice compliments already about it and it’s so versatile in terms of what you can wear with it. I wore this whole look to the Into The West Blogger Network 2nd Birthday Party last weekend, got lots of lovely compliments (thanks everyone!!!) and felt so so comfy in it the whole day. I love the colour and I will definitely be transitioning it into the Autumn with some cute knits and layering it up. This colour also works perfectly for Autumn/Winter and teams wonderfully with mustard, black, white, cream, tan, beige and brown. As I’ve just mentioned, the world is your oyster regarding the pairings with this skirt. It would work well in the office teamed with a shirt or blouse, casually with a tee which I have worn here or on holidays with an off-the-shoulder top. In terms of footwear, again there is so much versatility – I’m looking forward to teaming it up with my creepers and Adidas superstars for a fresh and funky look.
There’s definitely a lot of love for the bomber jacket this Spring/Summer. Can I just say – I did own one back in the 90’s – God knows where it is now…… it was a military green one and coincidently I have repurchased an almost identical one all these years later in Forever 21! As I mentioned above, the ‘Return of the Bomber’ deserves a whole blog post on its own….watch this space……but for now, we’ll just quickly talk about this one which I got from Zara. Zara are KILLING it when it comes to bomber jackets this season and this one in particular is no exception! I love that it has a luxe sports look to it and the colours mean it can be paired with almost anything. The perfect little summer jacket and that back detail is to die for!!
I decided to go for a more relaxed chic and funky vibe with this look by pairing the skirt with a simple grey t-shirt from Primark/Penney’s. I am a huge fan of grey and absolutely love it as a classic neutral base and colour. I think it works really well with the skirt in terms of the colour palette and style. Because of the silky finish to the skirt, it can veer towards the ‘dressy’ side but by teaming it with a very casual top such as a t-shirt – it can completely ‘dress-it-down’ and give it more of an edgier look.
Accessories-wise, and to add a pop of colour to the outfit, I’m wearing this fab statement Pompom necklace from Topshop. It’s one of those pieces that when you see it…..you have to have it – if you know what I mean? Perfect for summer, on trend with the Brazillian carnival vibe beading and Pompoms of course and can instantly transform an outfit. The bag is my ‘still-obsessed-with’ new YSL bag which as you can imagine, I’m wearing with everything these days! And the boots are from Office which I just recently picked up on their online sale for such a bargain – reduced from €95 to €43 – so you know yourself……..no-brainer situation. I find ankle boots like these (pointy-toe, leather, not too high) are classic and can work all year round with a multitude of outfits so basically they’re wardrobe staples! (P.S…..I need to stop saying this to myself every time I click check-out on the online basket!!!).
How everyone else is wearing them!!
Just another lovely idea to pair a simple cosy knit with the skirt – especially if it’s still a bit chilly and will also look good coming into the Autumn.
As you can see…….my fav Alexa Chung is a fan!
Solange Knowles looking FIERCE in her metallic peach colour pleated skirt!
