This quote by American Costume Designer and Oscar winner Edith Head made me laugh when I saw it. It’s like saying ‘some people need coffee, others don’t or some people need alcohol, others don’t.’ Which leads me on nicely to this weeks blog post and the fact that in my opinion (if anyone is interested in it) I think sequins should be celebrated more and not just labeled as standard ‘Christmas party ‘only-wear-once-a-year’ attire. Sequins aren’t just for Christmas ya know!
Enter very-sparkly H&M sequinned midi-length skirt (above) which has been in stores since before Christmas in this fab dusty-rose pink colour.
I’ve had my eye on this skirt for a while now and was tempted to get it before Christmas……so when I saw it still in stock in January, that prompted me to purchase and make it an ‘all-year-round’ item in my wardrobe. Along with being eye-sparkingly fabulous and in a very wearable colour, I also LOVE the length. Midi-skirts are sooo me – probably because I don’t particularly like my legs but also because and I’ll be honest here, I turned 40 last week and for me personally, at this stage in my life I don’t feel comfortable in mini-skirts or hem-lines that are raised way past my knobbly knees.
So here it is, in all it’s glory, styled two different ways to give you some ideas on how to incorporate it into a daily key-piece in your wardrobe. Will I be wearing this on the school-run? You bet I will!!!
Of course, this does not only apply to skirts, this could apply to a sequinned sweater styled up with a pair of nice distressed jeans, it could be a pair of sequinned boots styled with a maxi skirt or a sequinned dress paired with a plain white t-shirt underneath. Another staple wardrobe item which would be just gorgeous with this skirt is my fav – a denim shirt. The possibilities are endless in the world of ‘sequin-wearing’!
As seen above, for a casual, relaxed, ‘out-and-about’, daytime look, I’ve paired the skirt with a chunky knit in quite a neutral colour so as not to take away from the sequins and all the sparkly goodness.
Nothing says ‘cool casual’ more than a pair of sneakers and in particular Adidas Superstars so these were a no-brainer when I thought of styling this look. They completely dress down the skirt and transform it into a perfect ‘on-the-run’ outfit for your daily routine.
Moving on to a more ‘dressier’ option, I thought what better way to style up a sequin skirt for a glamourous night time look, than to pair it with an equally-as-stylish texture such as crochet/lace. I chose this as again it has that ‘glam appeal’ as something we associate with occasion wearing and a more night time look.
Can I just add at this point, the day I had these photos taken by my Instagram husband of course, a nice ‘shamal’ – (desert sand storm for those of you not familiar with them in the UAE) decided to blow so all those ‘wind-swept’ looks you see of me were perfectly staged! Who am I kidding? The truth is, I didn’t want to put on all of the makeup and do my hair again so ‘shamal’ or ‘no shamal’, I was doing this shoot that day! Brutal honesty at its best ha, ha!
You see what I mean about the wind-swept look!!! ↑
Again, a fab silk blouse, off-the-shoulder top or a pretty camisole would also look amazeballs with this skirt. Every item for these two looks I’ve styled , is something I’ve had in my wardrobe for a while now. Except for the skirt which is new, I’ve simply gone to my wardrobe and ‘fished’ out what I think works well with this. The point I’m trying to make here is that, you can just have one key piece – maybe something new and shiny that you are excited to wear – but don’t forget you probably have so much in your wardrobe already in which you can re-wear to make the entire ensemble look brand new.
Ok, I’ve gone off on a tangent a bit but you get my drift.
In addition to shifting up this look into a more night-time vibe, accessories are key as with anything fashion related. A pair of statement earrings, a clutch bag and funky heels can instantly transform a style to give it a glamourised effect – very simple. Pop on some red lipstick and you are good to go!

Thank you as always for stopping by for a little read and I really hope this post helps with people’s fear of wearing sequins outside of the Holiday Season ha, ha! I’d also like to think that I had a small part to play in dispelling the whole ‘Las Vegas Showgirl’ image of sequins. Coz ya know………they’re not just for Christmas! On a final note, see you back here soon and remember……..
