The Denim Midi-Skirt Look

Lets face it guys………denim is one of life’s basic necessities! In fact…….I reckon it should be up there with Abraham Maslow’s Hierarchy Of Needs (one thing I remember from my degree in Sociology!!!) somewhere in between ‘love/belonging’ and ‘esteem’! It’s one trend, material, style and look that will forever remain classic and timeless and never date!

So…… I was heavily pregnant last summer with my second child and the denim midi-skirt was everywhere I looked (I obviously couldn’t squeeze into one at the time) I decided to embrace it now……in winter and in January.  And why not….now is as good a time as ever!  After all, I am in Dubai and winter in the Middle East is basically a really, really, really nice summer in Ireland and the UK!  The trend was quite big for Spring/Summer 2015 but transcended into Autumn/Winter 2015 very nicely with the whole take on the 70’s vibe everywhere.  The High Street in particular is awash with denim skirts at the moment -most notably short styles – but the look I’ve styled for this actual post is the midi-skirt as I personally prefer a midi-skirt on me and its one trend that I did not want to miss out on!

It’s one of those looks that screams – ‘hey there…..I can do casual and dressy…so….pick me’ ha, ha! I have to admit – I do love the whole 70’s vibe, from fringe detailing, those rustic bronze, copper and orange colours to denim flares, polo-necks, knee-high boots, faux fur and wide-legged trousers. This denim midi-skirt ticks all the right boxes for me as it has a kinda cool ‘old-school’ vibe about it and I particularly LOVE the button detail down the front……gives it more of an edge.

Ok I do realise also that it’s not Autumn anymore – so I just need to ‘let it go’ but I’m not that ready yet to embrace all the pastel/Spring colours that are going to be all over the shops in a week or so once all the dark, gloomy and ‘old-season’ sales clothes have gone……..I need to squeeze a few more ‘wears’ out of my copper, burnt orange and browns….thank you very much!

Also…..just to add – how fab would this skirt be paired with a gorgeous pair of charcoal grey suede Stuart Weitzman’s (still on the wish list!) over-the-knee boots? Divine!

I’ve styled this look with a nod to the 70’s adding the ASOS burnt orange fringed boots and ‘that’ H&M bag – see below – which I’ve mentioned before in a previous blog post – see here – and which I think has a look of the Chloe ‘Faye’ about it.

I’ve added a casual jumper from Penney’s/Primark to the look which gives it that relaxed feel but again as denim and the skirt itself is so versatile – most tops would look great with this – in particular, a nice crisp white shirt, a fab cashmere polo-neck, a denim shirt (denim on denim is a fav look of mine), a turtle neck or another fav – a slogan or plain t-shirt.

A little bit of inspo…………

Alexa Chung looking effortlessly cool as usual in a button-detail denim midi-skirt and grey simple sweat-shirt

Diane Kruger making a fashion-forward statement whilst out shopping with her on-trend suede boots, chunky knit and slit-detail denim skirt.

I think this has to be one of my favourite styled denim skirt looks – nothing screams ‘I’m fashionably cosy’ more than a large wool chunky knit and as for that coat…………..#want.

Hope you got some inspiration from this post and remember a denim skirt is one piece of clothing that nearly always makes a reappearance in some shape or style every year so buying one is definitely a wise choice.  I plan to wear mine with some really nice  wedges or tan platform sandals for SS2016 along with some lovely summery tops – again any excuse to go shopping ha, ha…..

And I’ll leave you on a final note………

Happy Shopping

Irene xoxo
